MIKA kicked off Pride Cymru at Cardiff Castle, and one thing I was not expecting was the emotional rollercoaster that accompanied the high-energy performance. The historic castle provided a stunning backdrop, even as attendees navigated mud in wellies during summer rain. The downpour on Friday ceased just as MIKA began his set, and the crowd's energy remained undimmed.
A Special Night for MIKA
Running onto stage in a sparkly green suit and bright red shoes, the star who rose to fame in 2007 maintained 100% energy throughout. He called the gig "super special," noting he had never performed in Wales in 20 years. "I've been waiting to say this: let's go Cardiff!" he exclaimed, later calling himself a fool for not coming sooner.
Emotional Tributes and Crowd Interaction
MIKA's connection with the audience was exceptional. He dedicated Happy Ending to his late Welsh music teacher, Glyn Jones, with a hand to the sky, moving many to tears. He shared stories about pride, joined the crowd near the back, and even borrowed a pink cowboy hat. Before performing Golden, he said, "This song was meant for this place."
High Production Value and Inclusivity
The concert featured artistic visuals, a giant megaphone, five outfit changes (one premature after his trousers split during Lollipop), and MIKA dancing with sign language interpreters, whom he brought on stage to bow. The performance left me feeling proud to be Welsh and part of the LGBTQIA community, with songs about love and self-acceptance. I expected to enjoy MIKA live, but not to experience the best concert of my life.
