Lionel Messi's father, Jorge, has died aged 68 following a long-term health battle. The businessman and father of the legendary footballer passed away in hospital in Rosario on Friday night.
Health concerns and family statement
The news follows reports that speculated about his health during the recent World Cup, prompting the family to release a statement. It read: "The Messi family informs that Jorge is going through a health situation. At this time, he is under medical monitoring, recovering and evolving favourably within the condition he is presenting."
The statement added: "In response to the versions, rumours, and speculations that have circulated in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep distress over the lack of sensitivity, respect, and scruples with which some people have treated a strictly private and family situation."
Tribute from Newell's Old Boys
Messi's former club Newell's Old Boys paid tribute to Jorge, saying: "Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys bids farewell with deep sorrow and grief to Jorge Messi, who passed away at the age of 68 in the city of Rosario. The club added: "Jorge was the pillar and the person who supported with vision, rigor, and affection the career of the greatest player of all time alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini. His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory."
The tribute concluded: "Thank you for teaching him to love these colors. The Board of Directors, members, athletes, and the entire leprosa family embrace with affection Celia, Lionel, Rodrigo, Matías, and María Sol, and all their loved ones and close ones in this difficult moment."
