US First Lady Melania Trump has made an appearance after weeks of speculation over her whereabouts. Speaking live at the White House on Thursday, August 20, Melania said, "Good afternoon. I heard you missed me."
Her witty greeting was met with laughs from the crowd gathered in front of the iconic presidential home.
Concern over weeks of absence
Concern grew regarding Melania's whereabouts after she did not appear at several high-profile events over the past month. Her last confirmed public outing was at the FIFA World Cup final on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The 56-year-old missed a succession of notable occasions that many would have expected her to attend. These include Senator Lindsey Graham's funeral, a dignified transfer ceremony honouring fallen US service members and the rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner.
President Trump's summer activities
It is understood that President Donald Trump has been spending the summer at his Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey. Melania, however, has not been spotted alongside him.
Recent family photographs from Bedminster shared by the president's daughter-in-law Lara Trump featured the US leader, Eric Trump, herself and their children. Melania, however, was notably absent from the pictures.
Public appearances and approval rating
A thorough analysis found that she was seen in public just 47 times in 2025 following Trump's 20 January inauguration. She was only seen 38 days during the first seven months of 2026. Melania's absence follows her recently setting the record for the lowest net approval rating of any modern First Lady in United States history.
