Actor Rory Kinnear has reflected on the emotional scenes he witnessed at an airport arrivals lounge after being separated from his family for six weeks. In a personal essay, he described how the reunions of strangers conveyed a clear message: "life is better now that you're here."
Kinnear, who was waiting for his own family at Heathrow, observed a variety of greetings, from a dad fist-bumping his teenage sons to a group of friends slow hand-clapping a mate as she emerged. An older woman fanned herself with a magazine before laughing as her son and granddaughter walked out. He noted that while the signals differed, they all said the same thing about the joy of togetherness.
The actor admitted that some of those reuniting may not always see eye to eye, but the scenes underlined a shared human need for connection. He also spoke of his own difficulty being apart from his partner and children, describing himself as a "brittle husk" after two weeks into the separation. He questioned whether his happiness was only possible when his family was fully assembled.
Kinnear acknowledged that his six weeks of separation were "insignificant compared with the separation some families still endure." He said public health had deeply affected the private heart, and that separations reveal who we are: "we are the people that life has thrown us together with, through love, geography, birth, or choice."
