Meghan Markle reportedly asked about securing a suite at Windsor Castle after marrying Prince Harry, according to a royal commentator, amid suggestions she wanted accommodation comparable to that of Princess Kate.
The claim relates to the couple's time living in the UK following their wedding in May 2018. Speaking to GB News, royal commentator Kinsey Schofield claimed Meghan had approached the family about having accommodation within Windsor Castle.
Request for Windsor Castle accommodation
Schofield said: "Meghan Markle, after she married Prince Harry, approached the family and asked if they could have suites within Windsor Castle."
According to Schofield, Meghan wanted to share the same space as Queen Elizabeth II, but the request was rejected. "She wanted to share the same space with the Queen, and she was denied that space for multiple reasons," she said.
The commentator suggested one concern was privacy, given that Windsor Castle is open to tourists and parts of the property are accessible to visitors.
Comparison to Princess Kate
Schofield also claimed Meghan's request was linked to what she described as a "fixation" on what the then Duchess of Cambridge had, and wanting "something of similar value".
At the time, Prince William and Kate were living at Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. The four-storey property had been given to William and Kate by Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding present in 2011 and underwent extensive renovations before the couple moved in.
Meghan and Prince Harry, meanwhile, initially lived at Nottingham Cottage on the Kensington Palace estate after becoming engaged. The property later became a talking point in the couple's Netflix documentary, with Prince Harry and Meghan discussing its relatively small size.
Move to Frogmore Cottage
Prince Harry said: "As far as people were concerned, we were living in a palace. And we were in a cottage..." Meghan added: "Kensington Palace sounds very regal, of course it does. It says 'palace' in the name! But Nottingham Cottage was so small."
The couple subsequently moved to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor after its renovation. The property was refurbished at a reported cost of £2.4 million in 2018 and 2019. The cost was initially covered by the Sovereign Grant, and Prince Harry later repaid the amount in full.
The claims about a potential Windsor Castle suite were made by Schofield and were not presented as an official Palace account of Meghan's accommodation discussions.
