A cameo on the CBS sitcom Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage could be the key to restoring Meghan Markle's reputation in both the UK and Hollywood, according to a showbiz columnist.
Writing for the Daily Express, Fran Winston argued that a brief appearance on the show would allow the Duchess of Sussex to laugh at herself and showcase her comedy skills, something she has never publicly demonstrated.
Rumours dismissed
The suggestion comes after reports claimed Markle had been offered a role in the next season of Guy Ritchie's Netflix series The Gentlemen. Winston dismissed the story as "PR spin" designed to generate hype for the show's second season.
Express journalist JJ Anisiobi also rejected the rumours on the Daily Expresso news show, saying: "This story about Meghan [having] her role withdrawn from season three is complete and utter b******t. It's total tosh. There is no season three role. That's not happened."
A familiar storyline
Winston pointed out that Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, a spin-off from Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory, centres on the marriage of young parents Georgie Cooper (Montana Jordan) and Mandy McAllister (Emily Osment). Mandy is 11 years older than Georgie, an aspiring TV star frustrated at being stuck presenting the weather on local networks and desperate to be a huge star.
She suggested Markle could play Mandy's rival for a broadcasting role, a situation she experienced in real life when auditioning for roles such as a suitcase girl on Deal or No Deal. A cameo would allow her to poke fun at herself while acknowledging her tendency to impose herself upon situations.
Changing perceptions
Winston argued that the British public loves self-deprecating people, and Hollywood loves someone happy to laugh at themselves in a high-profile cameo, bringing additional viewers while proving they are warm, approachable, and easy to work with.
She concluded: "Forget Guy Ritchie. A two-minute cameo on Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage could be the answer to all of Meghan's image problems."
