Maya Jama slams 'diabolical' backlash after Ruben Dias split
Maya Jama hits back at 'diabolical' backlash after split

Maya Jama has responded to criticism over her love life after her split from Ruben Dias, agreeing with a TikTok user who described the backlash as "diabolical".

The 32-year-old presenter, known for hosting Love Island, is set to make her acting debut in series two of Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen on Netflix on Thursday (3 September), playing the character Aisha. She previously appeared briefly in Katherine Ryan's Netflix sitcom The Duchess in 2020.

Three public relationships

Since the age of 19, Jama has been in three public relationships: with Stormzy, Ben Simmons, and most recently Ruben Dias. Following her split from the Manchester City footballer in May, some social media users claimed she was always "in and out" of relationships.

TikTok star Lous_life came to her defence in a video, saying: "Some of the comments I've been seeing are diabolical. She's been in the public eye since she was 19, she's now [32] and she's been in three public relationships. I would love to know how many relationships you lot have been in from the ages of 19 to [32] because I bet it's a lot more than three."

Jama responds

Lous_life also hit out at those who "judge" Jama's personal life, adding: "Context matters." Jama showed her agreement by responding: "Glad someone said it," accompanied by laughing, love heart and shrugging emojis.

Jama's highest-profile relationship was with Stormzy, whom she began dating in 2015 before they split four years later. After a year-long romance with her ex-fiancé, NBA star Ben Simmons, which ended in 2021, she reunited with the rapper in 2023, but they parted ways again the following year.

Ruben Dias statement

Most recently, she enjoyed an 18-month romance with Ruben. It is not known why the couple parted ways, though in May he hit back at cheating allegations. In a statement on Instagram, he wrote: "I feel that when my 85-year-old grandad is asking me if I've cheated on my girlfriend because he's seen it repeatedly on the news, that's where I draw the line on what's acceptable and what's not. Maya and I have always had a relationship built on mutual respect. No line was ever crossed in that regard."

The presenter has not addressed her split from Ruben, but recently made a comment about her love life in general. In a message on Instagram, she wrote: "Truth is even when I tried to keep my relationships private we get photographed anyway, I'm an all or nothing girl, I don't casually date, so yes I will love loudly or not at all and if it end it ends. I decided a long time ago not to base personal life decisions on public opinions."
