Wai Ching Ho, the actress best known for her role as Madame Gao in the Netflix series Daredevil, has died at the age of 82. Her death was confirmed by co-star Peter Shinkoda, who announced the news on Instagram, stating that she had suffered a stroke.
Cause of Death Confirmed
According to actor Perry Yung, Ho "passed away peacefully after a stroke two days ago." The news came the same weekend as the death of Emergency star Randolph Mantooth. Yung honored Ho with a touching Instagram post, captioning a photo: "It's a very emotional moment for all of us who knew Wai Ching Ho. She passed away peacefully after a stroke two days ago."
Yung continued: "I had seen her perform many times on stage, had many a dim sum and she came to see [her performance group] Slant many times. I even had the enormous good fortune of having played her husband (parents to Justin Chon) in the film High Resolution. Wai Ching was a kind, compassionate human being whose work as an artist lifted every production to a higher standard, and we are better for it. Rest in power dear friend."
Tributes from Co-Stars and Filmmakers
Shinkoda also shared a personal tribute, writing: "I won't ever forget you. I learned every minute from you when we were together on and off set. I know wisdom − I'd hang on your every word. We will meet again, my friend. You were beautiful." The post garnered comments from fans and colleagues, with one user writing: "Saw her in a performance of King Lear not too long ago. Very kind and talented soul." Ho had appeared in the production "Laowang, A Chinatown King Lear," described on her Instagram as "a sweeping, funny, and deeply moving reimagining of Shakespeare's tragedy through the eyes of a Chinatown matriarch."
Filmmaker Judy Lei also paid tribute, calling Ho "super kind and generous" and noting that she "never display[ed] an ounce of disappointment in my lack of experience. I first saw her as Grandma in CHILDREN OF INVENTION. That red envelope scene at Ping's still hits hard because the two kids stepped into adult roles (unknowingly) and Wai's character was cautious of the situation and was protective. I'm so sad to hear of her passing."
Career Highlights
Ho was most recognized for her role as Madame Gao in the popular television series Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. She also contributed her voice to Pixar's Turning Red and appeared on stage in Celine Song's production, Endings. Her career spanned decades, with performances in both film and theater, earning her a reputation as a kind and talented artist who elevated every production she was part of.
