A man has proposed to his girlfriend outside a Spudbros potato van in Manchester, sparking a mixed reaction online. The couple got engaged in wet and cold conditions beside the popular jacket potato van, which travels around the country and has chains in Liverpool and London.
The proposal was shared on Spudbros' Instagram, with the caption: "It's official... two days ago we had the first ever proposal at Spud Bros! He got down on one knee right outside the van, and honestly... scenes." The post showed the special moment, but commenters were divided.
Some criticised the location, with one writing: "We are at a cultural low point." Another said: "Sorry you PROPOSED outside of a potato van in the wet and cold?" One commenter added: "I'd actually be mortified if I got proposed to by a street food van." Others joked about the smell, with one saying: "Imagine smelling garlic tuna cheese and beans while you're getting proposed to."
However, many defended the couple. One supporter wrote: "It's the thought that counts, and they both look very happy. Congratulations." Another said: "Not all proposals have to be something fancy like on top of the Eiffel Tower. It's authentic it's beautiful let them be happy."
The Spudbros brothers, who have served celebrities including Will Smith and Alex Warren, were reportedly "gobsmacked" by the proposal. The couple's engagement has sparked debate about the merits of low-key versus grand romantic gestures.
