Madonna has paid an emotional tribute to music producer William Orbit following his death at the age of 69. The Queen of Pop worked closely with Orbit on her acclaimed 1998 album Ray of Light, with the pair going on to win a Grammy together for their work.
A Creative Partnership Remembered
Following news of his death, Madonna, 67, shared a touching message on Instagram as she looked back at their creative partnership and the impact he had on her music. Alongside footage of the pair accepting their Grammy, she wrote: "Goodbye- William Orbit. I had an epiphany when I met you and started working with you."
Madonna said working with the producer had changed her understanding of what her music could be, adding: "I realized that music did not have to fit into categories or genres. So we created our own. You pressed a magic button inside of me and I fell into a galaxy of unrealized dreams. Your music gave me a magic carpet to fly on and I visited many places. Sad and Joyful."
A Transformative Time
The singer also reflected on how the collaboration coincided with a transformative period in her personal life, following the birth of her daughter Lourdes Leon. She continued: "I sang in ways I’d never sung before. I used words without caring if they made sense or not. In many ways you were my Ray of Light -as was my daughter Lola who was born around this time. I was starting a new chapter, I was choosing another road to walk down-and you were right by my side with your crooked teeth and your genius, way of hearing music."
Reflecting on their time working together, Madonna described the studio as "often church like", saying she would wait for Orbit's musical ideas before taking them and running with them. She added: "I miss those days. Only you could inspire me to write a song like Drowned World or Swim. You were so otherworldly. So singular."
Impact and Legacy
Although the pair eventually went on to work with other people, Madonna said she had never forgotten the period they spent creating music together. Signing off her tribute, she wrote: "Goodbye Billy Bubbles. I was so lucky to have known you and fallen down the rabbit hole with you."
Orbit's family and friends announced his death on Friday, revealing that the producer had died at home on July 23. A cause of death has not been disclosed. Their statement read: "It is with profound sadness that the family and friends with of William Orbit announce that William died at home on 23rd July 2026. We are deeply saddened by his passing. He will be greatly missed by us and by so many whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness. We kindly ask that the privacy of William's family and close friends is respected during this difficult time."
Orbit's collaboration with Madonna produced some of her best-known songs, including Frozen and The Power of Good-Bye, while he also worked with artists including Blur, U2, All Saints, Britney Spears and Melanie C. He enjoyed success in his own right too, releasing music including his Strange Cargo series and winning a string of major accolades throughout his career.
