Love Island fans question Dejon's 'I love you' to Meg after family criticism

Love Island viewers have questioned Dejon's decision to tell girlfriend Meg he loves her, after her family raised doubts about their relationship. During Thursday night's episode, Dejon took Meg to the terrace and declared his feelings, saying: “My heart feels so safe with you. Speaking to my mum today, it was good reassurance to what I already knew.” He added: “The past few days, probably even longer, I've had this feeling when I look at you. It's such a big thing, but honestly, I do love you.” Meg appeared thrilled and responded: “I love you too!”

However, the declaration came hours after Meg's family voiced concerns during a meeting. The relatives reportedly told the couple they appeared “too serious” and questioned whether they had fun together. They also criticised Dejon's “flirty behaviour” and suggested Meg had let him off lightly. Some fans believe these comments prompted Dejon to express his love sooner than he might otherwise have done.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one viewer noted a pattern in Dejon's actions: “Something negative happens. Dejon: Lets go exclusive. Something negative happens. Dejon: Will you be my girlfriend. Something negative happens. Dejon: I love you.” Another wrote: “Because dejon was told again there’s no visual spark he has to pull out the I love you bag!” A third said: “dejon def abt to come in with the ‘i love you’ to try and seal him and meg as winners after the shambolic meet the parents LOOOOL nice try.”

Despite the scepticism, Dejon had previously told fellow Islander Harry that he was falling in love with Meg but could not yet find the words. Other fans defended the couple, with one writing: “Meg and Dejon are the most genuine couple to ever go on love island.”

Elsewhere in the episode, tensions rose during the Couple Goals challenge, which was hosted by Meg and Dejon. When the question “Which couple is most fake?” was read out, Harry and Shakira chose Blu and Helena, prompting Helena to call it a “cop out”. Meg and Dejon then selected Shakira and Harry, with Meg saying: “I feel like Shakira, you’ve made some very hurtful comments to me that we’re not very nice and I’ve always been there for you.”

Love Island continues tomorrow night at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
