Lorraine Kelly has dismissed the suggestion that she would get along with US President Donald Trump because of their shared Scottish heritage. The television presenter, 66, made the remarks during an interview with fellow presenter Vanessa Feltz on the At Home with Vanessa YouTube channel.
Kelly, who has hosted her self-titled ITV show since September 2010 and has also appeared on Good Morning Britain, was discussing how she makes interviewees feel at ease. She explained that for members of the public raising awareness of a cause, her priority is ensuring they leave feeling they have done their best.
Celebrity Interview Tactics
For celebrities, however, Kelly said she relies on a different approach, one that involves their Scottish connections. She explained: "Do you know what really works for me? And I don't even try it, because I'm Scottish. As soon as I walk into one of these mad set-ups where it's in a hotel room and you've got your eight minutes or your ten minutes."
"I walk in and they've always got an auntie, an auntie Fanny, usually, from Glasgow or they love golf, or they love whiskey and that kind of breaks down barriers," she added.
Trump Comparison Rejected
Feltz then noted that Trump employs a similar tactic, given that his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was Scottish. Kelly acknowledged this, saying "sadly, tragically, yes he does." When Feltz joked that the pair would "bond instantly," Kelly laughed and replied bluntly: "No, I don't think so."
Trump, who was re-elected president, has visited Scotland several times to play golf and discuss politics. This year, Scottish police said they were preparing for their biggest operation since his 2025 visit, which included a stop at his Turnberry golf course.
This is not the first time Kelly has responded critically to Trump. After he claimed in 2025 that Ukraine started a war against Russia, Kelly posted on X: "Ukraine did not start the war. Remember Putin said he would win in less than a week. This is truly appalling."
