The death of One Direction star Liam Payne sent shockwaves around the world. To most, the X Factor heartthrob - who achieved stratospheric success with the best-selling boyband - had everything to live for.
However, in October 2024, the world was left shellshocked when it was announced that the father-of-one had died, aged 31, after falling from his balcony in his hotel room in Argentina.
Investigation and Arrests
The exact cause of Liam's death is still being investigated following five arrests after allegations of drug supply and negligence. By 2026, three suspects had all charges dropped, including businessman Rogelio Luis “Roger” Nores, who was cleared of manslaughter and drug-supply accusations.

Bag Strapped Over His Shoulder
Liam's body was found with a bag strapped over his shoulder - indicating he may have been preparing to leave the room. The bag was not present when he was carried from the lobby to his room on the third floor.
Meanwhile, a second-floor hotel guest discovered a leather bag on their balcony, shortly after the singer's tragic death. Investigators believe the bag, which was identified as the singer’s and not the one found next to his body, was lowered to the second-floor balcony as part of his attempted escape. Police have ruled out suicide, believing the singer was likely in a state of "semi or total unconsciousness" at the time of his fall.
Bottle of Jack Daniels
The hotel guest discovered that the leather bag contained a bottle of Jack Daniels. Liam had a profile battle with drink and drugs and was reportedly ordering bottles of champagne and whisky to his hotel room shortly before he died.
Newly released police files reportedly contain messages from a ‘Reception’ group WhatsApp chat on October 14, where the hotel manager Gilda Martin wrote: "This person is going to be very intense throughout his stay. It’s important that we tell him 'no', always kindly and with excuses. This is to stop him from continuing to be aggressive. Or at least not so much." Reception replied: "Will do whatever we can as long as he doesn’t get violent."
Pills and Drug Paraphernalia
Also reportedly in the bag were pills. A toxicology report found that the singer had cocaine, alcohol and antidepressants in his system at the time of his death. In October 2024, it was reported that preliminary toxicology tests revealed the musician had pink cocaine and several other substances in his system at the time of his fatal balcony fall.
In newly released police photos from Liam's hotel room, drug paraphernalia can be seen, including burned Coca-Cola can lids, a blackened spoon and half-burned candles. Police and prosecutors believe Liam heated the powdered cocaine into a liquid ‘crack’ form of the drug which he snorted or injected.
Cryptic Note
In perhaps what is the most notable of all the items reportedly found in Liam's brown leather bag is a handwritten note. Simply addressed 'For Liam', no other information has been released about the letter.
A tragic trove of documents, photographs, sworn statements and official reports gathered by investigators after Liam died in Buenos Aires have now been shared. Heartbreaking CCTV image shows the dad-of-one, hollow-eyed and drawn, stumbling through the corridors just one hour before he plunged to his death, in evidence shared by The Mail.
The report also reveals his family’s heartache, with a sworn statement from Liam’s father Geoff, who told prosecutors his son ‘went away’ when he was in the grip of his demons saying: "He was not in control with what he did. He was not Liam."
Exactly what happened to Liam may never been known, however he lost his life thousands of miles from home, leaving his family, friends and millions of fans heartbroken. He also left his beloved son, Bear, without a father, in a tragedy, which left the world shellshocked.
