Laura Whitmore's raw mushroom and mayo snack stuns guests

Laura Whitmore ate raw mushrooms dipped in mayonnaise during Saturday Kitchen Best Bites on BBC One, leaving her fellow guests visibly stunned and unable to watch.

Confession on the show

The former Love Island host made the admission during the episode, which aired today (August 15) as part of a summer run of pre-recorded Best Bites specials. Host Matt Tebbutt introduced the show, saying: "We're on our holidays, so instead of normal Saturday service, we're whisking you off around the world, delivering Sri Lankan spice, Ukrainian classics, Cypriot sunshine and a beautiful British afternoon tea in drink form. This is Saturday Kitchen Best Bites."

Matt put the question to Laura directly: "So Laura, a little birdy tells me you love eating raw mushrooms with mayonnaise?" Laughing, Laura did not hesitate: "I love raw mushrooms." She then picked up an uncooked mushroom and began eating it without a second thought, biting into it much like one might an apple.

Guests react

The reaction from those around the table was instant, with guest panellists Helen and Paul horrified, admitting they could not watch. The episode originally aired back in 2022, and viewers also took to X at the time to share their disbelief. One wrote: "Watching in horror as Laura Whitmore eats raw mushrooms with mayonnaise on TV."

Far from being embarrassed, Laura embraced the moment fully. She was presented with her own plate of raw mushrooms alongside two personalised bottles of mayonnaise labelled "Whit-Mayo".

Food heaven or hell

Laura had earlier told the show that her food heaven was a seafood linguine, while her food hell was anything featuring onions. Since the programme was pre-recorded, her food heaven or hell fate was decided by which mayonnaise bottle she chose. She picked blue — and landed on food heaven. Celebrating with another mushroom topped with mayo, she quipped: "That is lovely... it gets the pallet going for a seafood linguine."

Laura's food heaven, a seafood linguine, duly arrived alongside a glass of rosé wine, and she was seen savouring every mouthful — seemingly far more at ease than her fellow guests had been just moments before.
