Lady Gaga appears as a new version of Harley Quinn in the first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, opposite Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck. The singer and actress brings music and dance to the sequel, though director Todd Phillips insists it is not a musical, calling music 'an essential element'.
The trailer shows the pair meeting in Arkham Asylum, where Fleck was imprisoned at the end of the 2019 film. Harley Quinn's origin story is altered: she appears as a fellow inmate rather than a psychiatrist, though it remains unclear which side of the bars she is on. 'Let's get outta here,' she whispers, before a fantasy rooftop dance sequence.
Music features prominently, with the pair performing as Joker & Harley on a TV show, complete with band and backing singers. The trailer is soundtracked by What the World Needs Now Is Love. Phillips noted that Arthur 'has music in him', referencing the iconic dance scene from the first film.
British comedian Steve Coogan appears as an authority figure, asking 'What's changed?' to which Arthur replies, 'I'm not alone any more.' The trailer ends with Harley visiting Arthur in prison, drawing a smile on the glass with lipstick, which aligns with his face to form Joker's red paint. The film was released on 10 April 2024.
