Daniel Ings has addressed whether he will return as Ser Lyonel Baratheon in season two of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the HBO prequel to Game of Thrones. In an interview with Radio Times, the actor said he would “love to” reprise the role, but noted that the character does not appear in the other stories George R.R. Martin wrote in his Tales of Dunk and Egg series.
Faithful adaptation
Ings said showrunner Ira Parker is “sticking closely” to the source material to provide a faithful adaptation. However, he added that there is a “famous duel in the future” in Westeros lore that could involve his character. He joked: “Maybe I’ll be 60 by that time! Whatever happens, I’d love to put in Lyonel’s little dangly earring again because he’s such a fun character.”
Before landing the role of Ser Lyonel, Ings auditioned for the part of Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones, which went to Alfie Allen. Ings said the part wasn’t “meant” for him, revealing he had gone up for several different characters. He praised Allen’s performance as “incredible” and joked: “If I had made Game of Thrones, I wouldn’t have given it to me.”
Season two details
Work is taking place on season two, which will premiere in 2027. HBO executive Casey Bloys previously confirmed that, unlike House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms would be released annually, similar to Game of Thrones.
Season two will adapt the next Dunk and Egg novel, The Sworn Sword. The story takes place in the Reach during a major drought, during which Ser Duncan serves Ser Eustace Osprey, played by Peter Mullan.
Ings is next reprising his role as Freddy in season two of Guy Ritchie’s gangster series The Gentlemen. The interview comes as Netflix released a trailer for the forthcoming outing. Audiences can expect a bigger story as illicit operations expand internationally, with new villains including one played by Hugh Bonneville. The Gentlemen is confirmed to return for a third series.
