Kidman hails ‘amazing’ reunion with Bullock for Practical Magic 2

Nicole Kidman said it was “amazing” to reunite with her Practical Magic co-star Sandra Bullock for the film’s sequel, and thanked the “groundswell of fans” that made it possible.

The Australian-American actress, 59, starred alongside Bullock in the 1998 cult classic film – which follows witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens as they navigate life with their magical abilities.

Return to the franchise

The stars have reunited almost 30 years later for its sequel, which sees the sisters confront a multi-generational curse threatening their family.

Kidman praised how “gratifying” it was to return to the franchise so many years later, as she spoke to the Press Association at the European premiere of Practical Magic 2.

The Oscar-winning actress said: “It used to be that films came out and they died, then they would find a life of their own.

“So much of the time now that doesn’t happen – it comes out, it’s gone, it’s so quick.

“This is an example of a film that can find its way, and people eventually find it and then demand a sequel, which is great.”

Fan-driven sequel

Kidman also said the latest instalment in the franchise has been made “primarily due to the groundswell of fans” as she discussed the “amazing” new film.

She added: “To be able to come back 28 years later and star in this movie together, and be able to get it made…

“It is so hard to get a film made, particularly with a budget that is decent, and to be able to do it together as women is kind of fantastic.

“That’s gratifying in itself, and hopefully it says something about the industry where you can do it.”

Cast and premiere

The film is directed by Susanne Bier, and is focused on the female members of the Owens family – with Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest also reprising their roles as Aunt Frances and Aunt Jet, respectively.

Bullock, who attended the premiere wearing a bold leopard print dress with a bow detail, shared the sentiment that it was “easy” to step back into her role as Sally Owens almost three decades later.

Reflecting on her dynamic with Kidman, she told PA: “The bickering, the joking…

“We are the same people that we were back then, except now we have children.”

Oscar-winning actress Bullock also praised the magic of returning to the Owens family home, adding: “We don’t have the midnight margaritas without the house.

“The house is the heart of this film. It was the most iconic thing for us to rebuild that.”

Bullock embraced Kidman, who wore a white sequin gown with gold chain and pearl details, as they posed for photos on the star-studded blue carpet at the event in London.

They were flanked by co-stars including The Kissing Booth star Joey King, who wowed crowds in a light blue mesh gown worn over a pastel yellow two-piece.

The 27-year-old wore her long brown hair in loose waves, and her dress was embellished with floral details as she embraced the witchy fashion of the film.

Others in attendance include Game Of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, who opted for a simple burgundy gown which showcased her back tattoos.

Channing, who played Rizzo in Grease, was also at the event as well as Wiest, and they were joined by fellow stars of the film such as Solly McLeod and Xolo Mariduena.

Practical Magic 2 will be released in cinemas across the UK on September 11.
