Kelly Osbourne has publicly criticised her mother Sharon's support for Tommy Robinson and the far-right 'Unite the Kingdom' march. Speaking to Attitude Magazine at the National Television Awards, the 41-year-old said: "I don't agree with my mum, no."
Family disagreement over far-right rally
Sharon, 72, had earlier backed the far-right rally Unite The Kingdom, organised by Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon. Robinson said he was hosting the march for those "who have had enough of migration and mass immigration and the oppression from a tyrannical government", and said he would bring "London to a total standstill".
Sharon replied in the comments, saying, "See you at the march." Her comment sparked huge backlash, leading to her losing work and being dropped by the homeless charity Centrepoint.
Kelly's stance on her mother's views
Kelly added: "That's one thing that I can say I don't agree with her on. It's hard because I love my mum, but I also have to understand that she's entitled to her own opinions as well. And it's really hard when it comes to politics and things like that, but I… that's not for me."
Sharon has also faced criticism for her views on the trans community, after making comments about an age limit for decisions on gender-affirming care, claiming it could be a phase and stating that trans women shouldn't compete in women's sports.
Kelly's response on trans issues
When prompted about Sharon's polarising views, Kelly said she felt "sad." She explained: "I don't know if my mum knows enough trans people to make a fair judgment or anything to do with that sort of thing. Whereas for me, that is my world. And to be born in a body that doesn’t belong to you, I couldn't imagine anything worse."
Kelly said her mum may not be as educated on topics surrounding the trans community, but on a one-to-one basis, she insists her mum "gets it".
Her public comments came days after she opened up about her weight loss following the death of her father Ozzy last year. Kelly said she had "no idea" how much weight she had lost until she saw a picture of herself while trying on clothes. "I looked like the f****** Crypt Keeper. I said, 'This is scary. I didn't know I looked like this'. My spine – you could see every single bone," she told The Mail on Sunday.
The mum-of-one said she had been in "so much pain", which blinded her vision when it came to people warning her about her appearance, as she just "saw a broken person". She added: "I wore a wig to cover my face, so you couldn't see how skinny my cheekbones really were."
