Katy Perry's comments about her marriage to Russell Brand have resurfaced in the wake of the comedian's court case. Brand has been found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault by a jury of eight men and four women at Southwark Crown Court, following a three-week trial.
Perry, 42, and Brand, 51, met on the set of Get Him to the Greek in 2009 before marrying a year later in a traditional Hindu ceremony in India. Their whirlwind romance turned sour, however, with Brand announcing their split in December 2011 after just 14 months of marriage.
Katy Perry's Vogue Interview
In an interview with Vogue in 2013, the pop singer claimed Brand had become controlling during their relationship, before she learned that she wasn't to blame for their fallout. Perry also suspected the demise of their 14-month marriage was that Brand had a difficult time accepting she was a successful musician and businesswoman, even though he claimed that is what he wanted.
She explained: "At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they're like, I can't handle the equalness. He didn't like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting. I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can't necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go and I was like: This isn't because of me; this is beyond me. So I have moved on from that."
Divorce Text Message
The California Girls hitmaker claimed Brand sent her a text message saying he planned on filing for divorce. "He's a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him," Perry told Vogue. "Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011."
Taking to his podcast and later sharing the same clip via X, Brand reflected on his high-profile divorce from Perry in 2023. He claimed that there was nothing off-key with the singer, and simply mentioned how they fell apart due to normal, human reasons.
Unflattering Photo Tweet
In the midst of their relationship, meanwhile, Brand took to Twitter to share a somewhat unflattering photo of his then-wife, showing the Teenage Dream singer looking startled shortly after she had woke up. The tweet was subsequently taken down 48 minutes later after the post went viral, with many fans at the time claiming the post was "cruel".
