Katy Perry has disclosed that Russell Brand ended their marriage with a text message just 14 months after their wedding, and described his behaviour during the relationship as controlling.
The former couple married in October 2010 at the Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary in Rajasthan, India. They separated in December 2011, with their divorce finalised the following year, citing irreconcilable differences.
Text Message Divorce
Speaking to Vogue in 2013, Perry revealed how Brand communicated the end of their marriage. She said: "Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011."
The singer also described feeling controlled during their marriage, claiming Brand did not like her taking charge while she was on tour. She explained: "He didn't like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting."
Allegations Against Brand
Brand, now 48, has been accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse by four women in allegations relating to the period between 2006 and 2013. The claims were revealed in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4's Dispatches.
He has strongly denied all the allegations, insisting that his past relationships were "absolutely always consensual". Perry has not publicly commented on the accusations against her former husband.
Perry's Reflections
Perry added that she initially felt responsible for the breakdown of their marriage but later realised there were other factors behind their split. She said: "I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can't necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day."
Brand later reflected on their relationship during an appearance on Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge, describing Perry as an "amazing person" and admitting their romance came during a "chaotic" period in his life. The pair first met backstage at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, where Brand was presenting. They were romantically linked the following year before tying the knot in India.
Brand is now married to author Laura Gallacher, with whom he shares three children. Perry got engaged to actor Orlando Bloom in 2019, and the pair have a daughter, Daisy Dove.
