Kathy Griffin Reveals '22-Year-Old Boyfriend' Was a Social Experiment

Kathy Griffin, 65, has set the record straight after sparking a frenzy by seemingly announcing a relationship with a 22-year-old man. The comedian revealed on Instagram that the so-called 'hard launch' was actually a 'social experiment' and that the young man in the photo is her bodyguard.

Initial Post Sparks Frenzy

On July 10, 2026, Griffin shared a photo on Instagram of herself holding hands with a young man about to enter a black car, captioned: 'He’s 22. Have at it, internet.' The post quickly went viral, with followers flooding the comments section with messages of support, such as 'get it girl' and declarations of being 'obsessed.'

The Reveal: A Social Experiment

After initially commenting that she was 'dying at these comments,' Griffin returned to Instagram to clarify the situation. She explained that the post was part of a 'social media sociological experiment' and confirmed the man was 'helping her with security during my trip to NYC.'

Griffin noted a stark contrast in reactions across platforms: while Instagram users were overwhelmingly supportive, Threads users engaged in 'slut shaming, accusations of grooming and debates about how gross it would be for a 65-year-old woman to date a younger man.'

Calling Out Double Standards

In her follow-up post, Griffin called out high-profile older men in age-gap relationships, including Luke Wilson (54) with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, and Jay-Z and Beyoncé. She described these as 'some of the most long-lasting beautiful relationships in my beloved (though ageist and sexist) industry,' adding that her stunt was 'harmless fun.'

The experiment drew further praise from followers. User courtneyastodden declared: 'A Queen being a Queen.' Another user, mo.instagr, commented: 'The double standard is real.' ConnieMarieLynn expressed disappointment, saying: 'I’m disappointed!! I was LOVING 22 for you!'

Griffin's Recent Controversies

This is not the first time Griffin has stirred controversy. Weeks earlier, she criticized Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show for hosting UFC fighter Conor McGregor, who was found liable for rape last year. She stated: 'I do think it was a bad call for him to have rapist Conor McGregor on… I think the Fallon folks made a mistake by having [him] on. I think it sends yet another message to women and marginalised folks everywhere that we’re not equal and you can do anything to us and the perpetrators are still gonna be out there being glorified.'

Griffin also speculated that she had been banned from The Tonight Show since 2017, after a photo of her holding a severed head resembling President Trump sparked massive backlash.
