Kate Beckinsale has wiped her Instagram account after being targeted by cruel comments about her appearance. The 53-year-old British actress shared emotional posts on Saturday, revealing some of the hurtful messages she received about her weight following the death of her mother, Judy Loe, last year.
Emotional response to trolls
Taking to her Stories, the Underworld star shared screenshots of the comments, including one that read: "Loosen up the Ozampic !! You were divine and now you look anorexic!" Another person crudely told her: "Gain weight you f*** it."
In response, Kate explained how grief had affected her physically after losing her mum. She wrote: "You take a break from Instagram for several months following the death of your mother, delete all of your posts and explain in some considerable detail about what you may have lost weight including the fact that weight loss is one of the very first physical signs of bereavement… I think people might be broken."
Grief and health struggles
Kate's mother Judy died in 2025, just a year after the actress lost her stepfather, director Roy Battersby, in 2024. The Hollywood star is also reported to have posted a lengthy video discussing her health and the impact of mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) on her body.
Kate said: "Anytime I post a photo of myself, I receive an enormous amount of comments telling me how disgusting I look and I’m anorexic or I’m on meth or that I’ve lost so much weight."
Opening up about the devastating period she has endured, she continued: "First off, I’ve lost my entire family, except my precious daughter, in a short amount of time." Kate explained she was diagnosed with MCAS 16 years ago and said her "stomach is ground zero" when the condition flares up.
Regret and apology
However, after apparently receiving yet more criticism, Kate appeared to regret speaking so publicly about her health. One person took aim at the sound of her voice, writing that it "creaks like a door". Kate replied: "Sometimes when I am in a flare, I get crippling acid reflux. I probably should not have made this video. I am truly sorry."
She later issued another emotional message explaining that she had only wanted to raise awareness of the condition. "I really am truly sorry guys, I genuinely thought it would be helpful to raise some awareness about a disease that so many doctors don’t understand and it causes so much suffering," she wrote. "I wish I had known more about it years ago but I think I’m the wrong person, so I’m really sorry. I did not mean to offend."
Heartbreaking response
When another follower asked whether she would like to put on weight, Kate gave a heartbreaking three-word response: "Yes, very much." And after someone told the actress: "I liked you better when I didn’t hear you speak," Kate suggested she was done sharing so much of herself online. "Well, you won’t again," she replied. "I’ll delete everything except for the books I recommend."
According to the NHS, MCAS is a rare condition caused by an excess number of a particular type of white blood cell, which plays a key part of your immune system. MCAS causes these cells to gather in body tissues, such as the skin, internal organs and bones and cause extreme reactions such as itching, flushing, diarrhoea, vomiting, headaches and tiredness.
