Kai Rooney could soon be following in his father's footsteps at Manchester United after impressing for the academy team last season. His movements away from the football pitch ahead of pre-season have created a buzz with the Old Trafford fanbase, suggesting he might be preparing himself for senior football.
Potential Breakthrough Season
Kai, the 16-year-old son of Red Devils icon Wayne Rooney, is gearing up for a potential breakthrough season with Michael Carrick confirmed as the club's new permanent manager in May. Even with rife competition for places in attacking areas, it appears he is up for the challenge.
The teenager posted a cryptic image on social media on Tuesday which left fans equally confused and excited in equal measure. Uploaded to his Instagram Stories, Rooney's image appeared to depict a man flexing their bicep muscle in the gym.
Fan Reactions
Fans were divided as to whether it was him in the photo or someone else entirely. But it didn't stop them getting carried away as they registered their excitement about the promising striker.
One fan said on X: "Kai Rooney will be the only player to ever match/surpass his father's superstar status, Records and achievements in football history." Another added: "Damn how did we get from this to that in 3 months, this kid wants to oppress defenders like his father did."
But some cast doubt on the identity of the person featured. One eagle-eyed fan said: "That's not him in the 2nd frame. You need to be serious.. he posted that doesn't mean he's actually the one." A fourth person added: "Ummm these are two different people, you know that, right?"
Injury and Fitness
Rooney was injured for the last few months of the 2025/26 season after making his Under-18s debut in January. With ample time away from the football pitch, it appears he may well have been putting in hours in the gym to get himself in shape.
Given his youth, it would be no surprise if he was attempting to bulk up in preparation for a potential Premier League debut next term. Carrick is well aware of Rooney's talents and would have had a close look at him, having come up through the same age group as his son, Jacey.
Path to the First Team
The United boss has been spotted running the rule over the Under-18s last season and he may be willing to hand him a chance to impress in domestic cups next season. He could soon follow the likes of Shea Lacey into breaking into the senior team, along with United wonderkid JJ Gabriel.
Young Kai has missed out on the chance to become United's youngest-ever player, as he has surpassed the age of the club's youngest footballer on record, David Gaskell. That record has stood since 1955 despite United's track record of bringing homegrown players through from the academy.
However, he could still write his name into the club's history books as their youngest in the Premier League era. That honour currently belongs to Shola Shoretire, who appeared in the 2020/21 season at the age of 17 years and 19 days.
Rooney Legacy
He could beat his dad's record from 24 years ago, which set him on the path to stardom. Rooney Snr. famously made his Everton debut at the age of 16 years and 297 days old, scoring the winning goal against Arsenal back in August 2002.
Kai can make his debut 12 days prior to that if he appears on the first day of the Premier League season in mid-August. Even if he doesn't manage to convince Carrick before then, United fans are clearly excited about the prospect of another member of the Rooney bloodline playing at Old Trafford.
