Dannii Minogue has opened up about her first marriage to actor Julian McMahon, revealing that the relationship left her in significant debt. The singer and television personality, now 39, married McMahon in 1994 when she was in her early 20s, and found herself financially supporting both of them.
Speaking on BBC Radio 2, Minogue explained that she had been financially prudent before the marriage. However, after tying the knot, she became the primary earner, covering living costs in both London and New York. 'I was not only broke, I was in debt, a lot of debt,' she said.
Minogue, who gave birth to her son Ethan with partner Kris Smith in July, recalled the strain of maintaining two households. 'London and New York are expensive cities, we had nice things. And then every two weeks I flew back and forth,' she added.
The couple divorced less than two years later, with Minogue acknowledging that she had hoped McMahon would eventually contribute financially. 'Obviously I thought that once his career takes off and he's doing well, he'd put some money into the pot. But that was a silly thought, wasn't it!' she said.
Now, Minogue says she has learned from the experience and is determined to avoid similar financial pitfalls in the future. 'I'm just trying not to stuff it up again. Hopefully I learnt the first time,' she concluded.
