John Hannah has a message for cynics doubting The Mummy 4: the script is genuinely good. The 64-year-old actor, who reprises his role as Jonathan in the 2027 sequel, insists the film is not a cash grab despite skepticism following the poorly received 2008 threequel.
Sequel Reunites Original Cast
The upcoming installment will bring back Hannah alongside Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, returning to the dynamic of the beloved 1999 original. New additions include Kevin J. O'Connor and Oded Fehr, reprising their roles as Beni and Ardeth Bay, respectively. Michael Johnston, star of this summer's hit Obsession, is also confirmed for an undisclosed role.
Hannah, who was under strict instructions not to reveal spoilers before promoting his new project Benidorm is Murder, had read the script and shared his excitement. 'It's an age-appropriate sequel, kind of to the first Mummy film,' he said, noting the story picks up with the original characters.
Addressing the Critics
While the third film faced mixed reviews, Hannah is confident this sequel will win over audiences. 'It would be very easy to be cynical about this and go, all right, they're making it because there's an audience there and they can make some money and blah blah blah,' he said. 'But the script is really good. It's really funny and loads of s*** happens.'
He also joked about his character's lack of growth: 'Unfortunately, my character hasn't really evolved in any way,' he laughed.
The Mummy 4 is scheduled for release in theaters on October 15, 2027.
