Late-night hosts have taken aim at Donald Trump over his daughter Ivanka's use of a personal email account for White House business, highlighting the stark contrast with his past attacks on Hillary Clinton over the same issue. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host joked that Clinton would be “having a good laugh today”, adding: “Sometimes the jokes write themselves and this is one of those times.” Kimmel played a montage of Trump's vicious comments about Clinton, including that she “lied like a dog”, before quipping: “I assume he’ll do an interview some time this month claiming he’s never met her.”
Stephen Colbert on The Late Show also addressed the Ivanka email story, saying: “This is really damaging if anything mattered any more.” He then turned to Trump's statement on the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, where the president suggested that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman might or might not have been involved. Colbert remarked: “That statement informs us in no way. A Magic 8 ball would have taken a firmer stance.”
On Late Night with Seth Meyers, the focus shifted to voter suppression in the US. Meyers played a campaign ad from Georgia's Brian Kemp featuring “a pickup truck, guns, explosives and a chainsaw”, likening him to “the cousin my mum wouldn’t let me visit”. He noted that Kemp, as secretary of state, was criticised for laws disenfranchising African American voters, yet when he went to vote, his ID card wasn't recognised. “Brian Kemp made voting so hard he suppressed himself,” Meyers joked.
Meyers also highlighted a North Dakota voter ID law “meant to sabotage the Native American vote” and a South Dakota community of 2,200 Native Americans denied a polling location. “How is it so hard to get a polling location in South Dakota?” he asked. “You’ve got plenty of room. You have so much room in South Dakota that Bed, Bath & Beyond is three separate stores.” He concluded: “We’ve talked a lot about Russians interfering in our elections and rightly so but we shouldn’t forget there are plenty of Americans willing to do the same thing.”
