Jesy Nelson's Emotional Journey: From Feeling 'Lost' to Finding Purpose in Motherhood

Former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson has opened up about her transformative journey into motherhood, revealing she felt profoundly "lost" before welcoming her twin daughters last year. In an exclusive preview of her new six-part documentary series, the 34-year-old singer shares raw and emotional insights about her pregnancy complications and the life-changing impact of becoming a mother.

Pregnancy Complications and Medical Crisis

During her pregnancy, Jesy faced terrifying medical challenges when her twins, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster, developed twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome in the womb. This condition could have been fatal, with doctors warning there was a "90-95%" chance both babies wouldn't survive without urgent intervention. The documentary captures poignant moments where Jesy tells cameras: "I can't imagine not having these babies. They're my children now, and I felt them kick. They're proper formed little humans."

The twins were eventually born at 31 weeks in May last year, after Jesy and her then-fiancé Zion Foster spent two months living in a London hospital for close medical monitoring. This period marked the beginning of what would become an ongoing health journey for the family.

Rare Diagnosis and Parenting Challenges

In January, Jesy revealed her twin daughters had been diagnosed with SMA Type 1, a rare genetic condition that causes progressive muscle wastage. The singer has since joined calls for all UK babies to be checked for SMA at birth, highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention.

Despite the challenges, Jesy describes her daughters as "superhuman" for their resilience, telling Jamie Laing on his Great Company podcast: "Every day they are happy, and I'm like, What have I created? The s**t that they've had to go through, and they're still happy and smiling."

Personal Transformation and New Priorities

The documentary reveals how Jesy's perspective on life has fundamentally shifted since becoming a mother. She admits she never wanted children before her relationship with Zion, saying: "Before I got pregnant, I was lost. I felt really lost. I felt like I didn't have a purpose."

Now, she describes motherhood as "without a doubt, the best thing that ever happened to me," despite the difficulties her family faces. Jesy also notes how becoming a mother has changed her relationship with social media and public perception: "Since becoming a mum and being pregnant, I'm just, I don't really give a s**t anymore. I just care about them, all the other s**t don't matter."

Relationship Changes and Co-Parenting

Since filming much of the documentary, Jesy's personal circumstances have evolved. She and Zion have ended their romantic relationship but remain close friends committed to co-parenting their daughters, who require round-the-clock care. This arrangement reflects their shared dedication to providing the best possible support for their children despite relationship changes.

Documentary Focus and Release

While the series will address Jesy's reasons for leaving Little Mix, much of the focus remains on her pregnancy journey and first year with her twins. The documentary provides intimate access to Jesy's experiences, from the medical crises during pregnancy to the ongoing challenges of parenting children with special health needs.

Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix premieres on Prime Video on February 13, offering viewers an unprecedented look at the singer's personal transformation and the realities of her motherhood journey.
