Jamie Lee Curtis has clarified her earlier comments about guest starring on New Girl, after internet users reacted to her saying she 'hated' the experience. The 67-year-old actress addressed the remarks in a follow-up statement on Instagram, explaining that her dislike was for the single-camera format, not the show or its cast.
Initial Comments on New Girl
Curtis appeared in two episodes of the sitcom, playing the mother of leading lady Jess, portrayed by Zooey Deschanel. She starred alongside the late Rob Reiner, who played her ex-husband in the 2012 episode 'Parents' and the 2018 episode 'The Curse of the Pirate Bride'.
In a recent interview, Curtis said: 'I did a single camera, which I hated.' She clarified to NBC that her issue was not with the cast but with the single-camera format, which lacks a studio audience. She added: 'It's a great show, New Girl, very funny, but doing it is just like doing a movie. You know, you've got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It's silent, and it's awful. For me, awful. Single-camera comedies, for me: not fun.'
Instagram Clarification
Despite her initial clarification, New Girl fans were not satisfied, prompting Curtis to issue a longer statement on Instagram. She posted a behind-the-scenes photo of herself smiling with Deschanel and Reiner, captioned 'HEY INTERNET! HI!'
In the caption, she wrote: 'As if we don't have bigger issues facing Americans and the world at large and natural disasters and unnatural behaviours of despots than to be concerned about a flip comment picked up at a press moment promoting Newlyweds.' She was referring to the upcoming NBC sitcom she had been promoting, which premieres this October.
Praise for the Show and Cast
Curtis explained that she was 'gushing about a multi-camera sitcom that I co-created along with Gail Lerner about a late in life love and people finding each other and marrying on a whim.' The show stars Tea Leoni and Tim Daly as the couple.
She compared the experience of performing live in front of a studio audience, which she enjoys, to working on a single-camera comedy like New Girl. She said: 'There's absolutely no feedback, as you're trying to do comedy, like a comedy feature and I said it wasn't my favourite experience although the show itself is fantastic and the team that made it are talented.'
Curtis also praised Deschanel, calling her 'an absolute gem of a human' and noted that playing opposite her friend Rob Reiner was 'sweet and lovely'. She concluded: 'So please, let's not waste clicks and comments and just move on to WAY more important things. That will be all.'
