Italian actor Remo Girone, known for his roles in La Piovra and Ford v Ferrari, has died at the age of 76 following a battle with bladder cancer. He passed away on Friday, October 3, at his home in Monte Carlo.
Girone began his career in 1974 with the film The Antichrist and went on to appear in numerous Italian productions, including Father of the Godfathers, Malamore, Breath of Life and Don't Stop Me Now. He gained international recognition for his portrayal of Enzo Ferrari in the 2019 blockbuster Ford v Ferrari, starring alongside Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
His Hollywood credits also included the 2016 crime drama Live by Night, in which he played Mafia boss Maso Pescatore opposite Ben Affleck. He later appeared in an episode of Killing Eve and made his final on-screen appearance in 2023's The Equalizer 3 alongside Denzel Washington.
Born in 1948 in Eritrea to Italian parents, Girone moved to Italy to study acting at the Silvio d'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he worked continuously in both film and television across Italy and the United States.
In 2021, he received lifetime achievement awards from the Venice International Film Festival and the Flaiano Film Festival. Girone is survived by his wife, actress Victoria Zinny, whom he married in 1982, and his stepchildren, Veronica and Karl.
