Helena Bonham Carter, 60, is in a relationship with psychoanalyst Rye Dag Holmboe, 38, following her split from film director Tim Burton, 68, in 2014. The actress described the breakup as both 'cruel' and 'transformative'.
Relationship Beginnings
The former couple, who share two children and were together for 13 years, ended their relationship 12 years ago. Bonham Carter met Holmboe after a 'chance' meeting at a mutual friend's wedding, and they have been together since 2018.
The couple were seen out for a stroll in Hampstead, London earlier this week. Despite the relationship, Bonham Carter has said she will never marry, explaining she cannot make an 'unhealthy' promise to someone.
Public Comments
Speaking about the relationship in December, she said: "I mean, we're not meant to be forever." She added: "I've never actually gotten married because I can't say those [words], I can't honestly make that promise because I just don't think it's a healthy one."
Bonham Carter described the meeting as a 'sliding doors' moment, telling The Guardian: "A totally random thing, which both of us nearly didn't go to, so it was one of those moments that was so chance and ended up determining so much." She noted she couldn't say much about Holmboe due to his profession, saying: "I can't say much about Rye, because he's a psychoanalyst, so he needs his anonymity."
Moving On
The actress explained she was 'bored' of grieving her former relationship. She told Harper's Bazaar: "You break up, you grieve, you get bored of grieving. And then you finally move on." She added that she had found "unexpected magic" with Holmboe, saying: "I'm very happy with someone else. It's been a bit of unexpected magic in my life."
Bonham Carter described her partner as "unbelievably mature", telling The Times: "Everybody ages at a different rate. My boyfriend is unbelievably mature. He's an old soul in a young body, what more could I want?"
Reflections on Split
Bonham Carter split from Burton in 2014. The pair have two children, Billy, 22, and Nell, 18. She said on Bella Freud's Fashion Neurosis podcast: "A divorce is truly - in a family that's close as ours - was transformative to everybody."
Admitting they 'didn't fit each other', she continued: "Having said that, if you don't fit each other, it takes a lot of bravery, but it's better to move than stop each other from going. I mean, we're not meant to be forever."
In 2020, she told the Mail about the "cruelty of divorce", saying: "The cruelty of divorce is extraordinary. But then you get to a point where you're like, 'Oh, I get this week off!' Some parts are very much to be recommended."
