Hayden Panettiere's younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died unexpectedly from an undiagnosed heart condition. He passed away suddenly on February 19, 2023, in New York City at the age of 28.

Medical Examiner's Report

The Medical Examiner concluded that his abrupt death was due to cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart) along with complications from the aortic valve. Following the medical examiner's report, Hayden, alongside her parents, Skip Panettiere and Lesley Vogel, issued a joint statement to ABC News.

They expressed that while the medical explanation provided little comfort, they chose to remember his enormous spirit, noting that "Jansen's heart could be seen in his eyes, and his charm in his brilliant, engaging smile". Jansen was Hayden's only sibling, and she spoke openly about the profound grief she felt over his loss.

Career and Legacy

In a chat with People magazine, she revealed that his loss felt like losing "half of my soul," highlighting that the severe trauma and stress led her to temporarily grapple with agoraphobia – an anxiety disorder where an individual fears and avoids places or situations that might trigger panic.

Panettiere had been in the acting game since she was a toddler, beginning on soap operas before moving onto significant film and television roles. She shot to global stardom playing the superpower-healing cheerleader, Claire Bennet in NBC superhero drama series Heroes, which aired from 2006 to 2010.

Hayden also bagged two Golden Globe nominations for her portrayal of troubled country star Juliette Barnes in the drama series Nashville. She also portrayed the much-loved character Kirby Reed in multiple instalments of the Scream franchise, including Scream VI.

Earlier this year, the star released her book, This Is Me: A Reckoning, sharing her personal journeys through child stardom, postpartum depression, and addiction recovery.

Industry Mourns

Her sudden death has sparked widespread sorrow across the showbiz industry. Co-stars like Melissa Barrera and Selma Blair, along with the actors' union SAG-AFTRA, swiftly issued messages of heartbreak and support for her family.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with her ex-partner, Wladimir Klitschko.
