Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to be snubbed by their famous neighbour Katy Perry, who is reportedly planning to marry former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau at her Montecito mansion in late summer. The wedding, which California Governor Gavin Newsom is tipped to officiate, is expected to be the social event of the year in the exclusive enclave, drawing a galaxy of household names.
However, according to a senior Hollywood source, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are "highly unlikely" to receive an invitation, despite living just down the road. The source said: "Even though they only live down the road, Harry and Meghan should not expect an invitation in the mail."
Burned Bridges with Neighbours
The source explained that the royal couple have "pretty much burned all their bridges with fellow well-known locals who feel – fairly or unfairly – that the Sussexes only want to socialise with anyone they believe can be of financial use to them." The source added: "That can be in the form of some sort of proposed commercial alliance or even simple advice as to how they might earn more money. It’s tiresome – and it has just about turned everyone off."
Among the iconic Hollywood figures who own homes in Montecito – about 90 miles north of Los Angeles – now actively keeping their distance are Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Costner, Rob Lowe and Steven Spielberg. Even Oprah Winfrey, who attended Harry and Meghan's 2018 wedding and hosted their bombshell 2021 TV interview, has "quietly distanced herself from them," according to the source.
Early Friendship Fades
Shortly after the Sussexes moved into their £10.9 million Montecito mansion in July 2020, Perry and her then live-in boyfriend, English actor Orlando Bloom, struck up an early friendship with their new neighbours. Both couples went Christmas caroling together in the neighbourhood, and Harry and Meghan were VIP guests at one of Katy's shows in Las Vegas during her residency at the Resorts World Theatre.
But she and Bloom, father to their five-year-old daughter Daisy, soon drifted away from the royal couple. Last month, the Sussexes were not invited to attend her opening World Cup show at LA's SoFi Stadium, where she performed her emotional track "Wonder" watched by new love Trudeau.
No Socialising Since Trudeau Moved In
Katy, 41, who was previously married to English comic Russell Brand, and Trudeau, 54, who shares three children with ex-wife Sophie Grégoire, have not socialised with Harry and Meghan since Trudeau moved into her £11.2 million estate in Montecito's East Valley Road earlier this year.
