Bruno Guimaraes believes Eddie Howe will become England manager in the future. The 48-year-old has departed Newcastle with immediate effect after nearly five years in charge. His exit comes after discussions with the club's hierarchy over the last 48 hours. Matthias Jaissle of Al Ahli is reportedly in advanced talks to take over at St James' Park.
Guimaraes' prediction
Speaking to FourFourTwo about the "fabulous" boss in 2025, the midfielder said: "He is by far the best European coach I’ve had. No doubt he’ll be England manager one day. As a person, he’s a sensation – a true legend."
"He’s gifted with strong man-management skills. He knows exactly the best way to talk to you in private, in the dressing room and in the press. He still has a long and promising career ahead of him."
Howe was heavily linked with the Three Lions job in 2024 following the departure of Gareth Southgate. The role eventually went to Thomas Tuchel, who is set to remain in post until 2028 despite some calls for him to go after England's disappointing World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina earlier this month.
Howe's departure
The Athletic reports that Howe, meanwhile, is planning to take a break from football after his Newcastle exit. However, Guimaraes previously offered a prediction for which job he could take in the future after life in the north east, even if it might not be in the immediate term.
Howe is not the first big name to depart the Magpies this summer, with Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon having preceded his exit. Guimaraes himself has been the subject of a protracted transfer saga with Arsenal keen on signing the Brazilian.
Shearer's reaction
As for Newcastle, Magpies icon Alan Shearer offered his take on Howe's departure in the hours after news broke. He said: "I’m very, very surprised with the news that Eddie Howe is leaving Newcastle. I guess it's strange timing with three weeks to go until the new season kicks off."
"I don't know what's gone on, whether it was the end of last season, whether it was the summer, whether he feels they can't continue to sell his best players. I’m led to believe it was Eddie’s decision to leave."
He continued: "What I would say is thank you. Thank you to Eddie for what he's given us. I mean, he gave me my best day as a Newcastle fan with that day at Wembley. He's given us some incredible nights in the Champions League that we'll never ever forget."
