Aldon Smith, a former defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers, has died at the age of 36, the team announced Saturday. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Smith played six seasons in the NFL, representing the 49ers, Oakland Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers selected him as the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, and he quickly made an impact, helping the team reach three consecutive NFC championship games.
In a statement, the 49ers expressed their devastation over Smith's sudden passing. They highlighted his undeniable talent and dominance on the field, noting his rookie season as one of the best in NFL history. Beyond his athletic achievements, the team remembered him for his infectious smile that brightened every room he entered. They extended their deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
Smith's rookie campaign was remarkable, with 14 sacks and 27 quarterback hits, earning him second place in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. In 2012, he achieved 19.5 sacks—still a 49ers franchise record—and 29 quarterback hits, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors as the team reached the Super Bowl.
However, off-field issues marred his career, including multiple DUI arrests and a 2013 arrest on felony charges for possessing illegal assault weapons. The 49ers released him in 2015 following an arrest for DUI, hit-and-run, and vandalism. Smith faced multiple suspensions from the NFL for violations of personal conduct and substance abuse policies. After a final season with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, he formally retired in 2023.
