Netflix has shared a first look at Florence Pugh in the upcoming period drama East of Eden, based on the novel by John Steinbeck. The seven-part series is set to debut on the streaming platform in October.
Fans have responded enthusiastically to the images of the Marvel star in character, with many expressing excitement for the adaptation. The series is described as a multigenerational saga focusing on the Trask family and the antihero Cathy Ames, played by Pugh.
Adaptation and cast
The book East of Eden is a family saga spanning several years, centered on two families, one based on the real-life family of Steinbeck's maternal grandfather. The author himself appears as a minor character in the later stages of the story.
According to Netflix's synopsis, the new interpretation will explore the Trask family saga, with attention on Cathy Ames. Pugh's character is intertwined with the lives of generations of men from the Trask family, including Adam and Charles, as they experience the darker side of the California dream.
Writer's connection and praise
The series is adapted by Zoe Kazan, who has a family connection to the source material. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden starring James Dean. Zoe Kazan told Netflix's Tudum website: “What I felt was the whole epic story is an opportunity to explore, to fall in love with all these characters.”
She praised Pugh's performance, saying: “I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good. She is the exact right person to play Cathy. I don’t use this word lightly: I think she’s a genius.”
