Erykah Badu has announced her first studio album in 15 years, titled Before the World Blows, a collection she describes as a meditation on the chaos of modern life and the resilience of love. The record, her first since 2011's New Amerykah Part Two, is set for release in November.
A Long-Awaited Return
In an interview, Badu explained that the album's title reflects a personal urgency: "I felt like I had to get these songs out before everything collapses, but also before I lose my own sanity." The project was recorded over the past three years in her home studio in Dallas, with contributions from a small circle of longtime collaborators.
The lead single, "Golden Hour," was released on Friday and features a stripped-back arrangement of piano and her signature vocal phrasing. Critics have already noted its resemblance to her early work on Baduizm, though Badu insists the album is not nostalgic: "I'm not looking back. I'm just trying to make sense of now."
Musical and Lyrical Themes
Across 12 tracks, the album weaves together neo-soul, jazz, and spoken-word interludes, touching on themes of political unrest, environmental anxiety, and personal growth. One track, "Letter to My Daughter," is a spoken-word piece addressing her children about navigating a fractured world.
Badu also confirmed a supporting tour, with dates in North America and Europe beginning in January. She said the live show will be "intimate but expansive," featuring a full band and visual projections created by artist and frequent collaborator.
Impact and Reception
Advance reviews have praised the album's cohesion, with one critic calling it "her most focused work in two decades." Badu, however, remains measured about the response: "I'm just happy to be sharing again. The rest is out of my hands."
The album will be released on vinyl, CD, and streaming platforms on November 14. A deluxe edition with three bonus tracks is available for pre-order exclusively through her website.
