Eric Knowles, the 73-year-old antiques expert known for Bargain Hunt, has faced heartbreaking times off-screen, including a childhood cancer scare and the tragic death of his son. He retired from his corporate role in November 2023.
Early life and career
Born in Nelson, Lancashire, Knowles attended Nelson Secondary Technical School. In 1976, he joined London auction house Bonhams as a porter in the ceramics department, rising to head of department by 1981. In 1992, he set up a second office in Bristol.
His career continued to flourish, and in 2021 he was appointed non-executive director of The Hoard Ltd, a decorative art and design emporium. He is also known for appearances on Antiques Roadshow and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is.
Childhood leukaemia scare
As a child, Knowles was hospitalised after a leukaemia scare, and his parents feared he might die. During the BBC show Matron, Medicine and Me, he revealed that the condition was considered a "death sentence" at the time. It turned out to be glandular fever, not cancer.
The series celebrated the evolution of the NHS, exploring how the healthcare system has changed since its introduction in 1946. Knowles was among celebrities sharing their personal NHS experiences.
Tragic loss of his son
In May 2015, Knowles' 26-year-old son, Seb, was killed in a car accident on the M40, colliding with a lorry. Seb was a DJ and bank manager. Knowles, who shared a love of music with his son, said he would have become a radio DJ if not for his antiques career.
After the incident, Knowles thanked supporters on X, writing: "Thank you so much for your kindness, Seb's Dad." Four months later, he expressed gratitude again: "Just a much belated but heartfelt THANK YOU to all out there for your kindness and words of support with regard to our son Sebastian."
