Emmerdale actor Nick Miles, known for playing Jimmy King, is married to Stephanie Lumb, who originally turned down his first marriage proposal. The couple met in 2005 when Nick bought a flat opposite hers in central Leeds.
How Nick and Stephanie met
Nick took Stephanie for a drink in Mojos bar, where she had no idea he was on television. He previously recalled to The Mirror: "It took her a bit of time to get used to it, and she gets jealous that my job sometimes gives me lie-ins. But she takes it all in her stride and enjoys it really."
Seven months into their relationship, Nick proposed, but Stephanie declined. According to Nick, "it didn't matter because I knew I wanted to be with her anyway."
The second proposal and wedding
Nick tried again and asked her to marry him while in Edinburgh. He recalled: "We were in Edinburgh and had been to watch Chicago. I was emboldened by too many gin and tonics and proposed on the way back to our hotel."
Nick announced their engagement at the National Television Awards in 2006, saying: "I'm getting wed. It's very exciting." A source later told The People: "Nick's over the moon. He's been smiling all week and couldn't wait to break the news."
The pair married in Penrith, Cumbria, in December 2006, with just two friends as witnesses. They are reported to live in West Witton, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Low-key celebration
Nick said of Stephanie: "I just knew instinctively that she was right for me. She's gorgeous, level-headed and we're the perfect match." He also explained their decision for a quiet ceremony: "We've both been married before and had big dos then. So we wanted it to be secret and low-key. We've celebrated with our families since, though."
This week on Emmerdale, Jimmy King was killed off when his car ploughed into the wedding marquee of Joe Tate and Dawn Taylor. In emotional scenes, wife Nicola, played by Nicola Wheeler, arrived and shared Jimmy's last moments with him. Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
