Emmerdale's Katie Hill has teased the future between Sarah and Charity after the latter's baby Leyla betrayal and Dr Caitlin Todd's accidental death.
Sarah's Story So Far
Actress Katie joined the ITV soap in 2017 as the next star to be cast as Sarah Sugden. One of her major storylines was being diagnosed with Fanconi Anaemia, which has shortened her lifespan and puts her at an increased risk of being diagnosed with cancer.
Sarah decided that she wanted to become a young mum but due to her condition, it was unlikely that she'd be able to fall pregnant, even with IVF. Instead, Charity Dingle offered to become her surrogate.
Since then, Sarah and Jacob became engaged, then married, as they celebrated the news of Charity's pregnancy. Unfortunately, viewers know the truth isn't so simple as Charity had a one-night stand with Ross Barton, which led to her falling pregnant.
The Aftermath of Dr Todd's Death
As viewers will recall, Charity ended up in labour while trapped in a broken hospital lift with Ross and Mack by her side. Although the birth was traumatic, baby Leyla arrived safely and Charity was hoping her secret would stay just that.
However, Dr Caitlin Todd surprised Charity by telling her she knows that Jacob isn't Leyla's dad, and has since been taunting Charity with said information.
Viewers waited to see Dr Todd's final scenes play out. As she continued to torment Charity, the camera panned to see Sarah Sugden silently listening to everything.
Learning about her attacking Charity, Sarah decided to confront Dr Todd with Charity hoping that the doctor wouldn't let slip her baby Leyla secret. After screaming at Dr Todd to leave, Sarah pushed her causing the villain to trip and bang her head on the edge of the table. As she rolled onto her back from the impact, blood quickly pooled out of her head as she lay lifeless on the floor.
In the following visit to the Dales, Sarah and Charity attempted to figure out what to do in the aftermath of Dr Todd's death. It was then that former police officer, Serena Sugden, entered their home.
After the shock wore off, Serena helped them get their story straight ready for Sarah to claim self-defence. However, Charity shocked them both by calling the police telling them she had accidentally killed someone.
Katie Hill's Tease
Since then, Sarah has been trying to keep it together as Charity stays determined to take the fall for her. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Katie said: “You know, it changes everything, it completely rocks her world. But obviously, it was by accident.
“We all know Sarah as a character, she doesn’t have that in her. So, it comes as a massive shock. I think when it first happens, she just doesn’t even know how to process it. She can’t comprehend that this has happened.
“It’s sort of transitioning Sarah from being this innocent, happy young mum… to then this massive moment in her life that will change her forever.”
However, Sarah is still unaware that herself and Jacob aren't Leyla's biological parents. Realising that Sarah is technically Leyla's niece, the actress quipped: “Honestly, I didn’t even think about that for a long time. Then someone said to me, ‘Sarah’s breastfeeding her auntie’, and then I couldn’t get it out of my head. I was like ‘this is really, really weird’.”
Discussing the potential fallout if and when the secret is revealed, Katie teased: “It’s the type of thing we won’t know until we know. It’s a massive thing, because, obviously, she’s raised this baby since she was born. That love can’t just go away like that. The biological side of things has changed, but you don’t just stop loving a child that you’ve raised.”
She continued: “Charity’s given her the best gift she ever could have asked for. So, for that to be taken away from her, it’ll definitely cause issues with their relationship.”
