Emmerdale Star Gaynor Faye Says Same-Sex Romance Plot Was Scrapped
Emmerdale Star's Same-Sex Romance Plot Was Scrapped

Gaynor Faye, who played Megan Macey on Emmerdale from 2012 to 2019, has disclosed that ITV soap producers considered a same-sex storyline for her character but ultimately scrapped it. Speaking to Zingo Bingo, Faye revealed that the plot would have involved a romantic relationship between Megan and Harriet Finch, played by Katherine Dow Blyton.

Planned Romance Never Made It to Screen

Faye explained that the storyline was discussed during her tenure on the show. 'In the old-fashioned world, love is love. It's not a case of, suddenly they turned their sexuality. It's a case of you just falling in love with somebody,' she said. 'It would be good to see more storylines like that.'

Megan Macey was a central character in the Dales, involved in high-profile romances with Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) and Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson), as well as a dramatic cerebral palsy diagnosis for her daughter Eliza. Despite these storylines, the same-sex romance never materialised.

Departure and Potential Return

Faye left Emmerdale in 2019 to pursue theatre work. 'I've not been asked to go back, to be honest,' she said. 'I left to go and do some theatre, but it's six years ago now. I was in it for seven [years] and I've been out of it six. I think I'd go back if there was a really good reason.' She noted that only Jai remains connected to Megan, suggesting a return could involve 'messing up Jai a bit' or the daughter they share.

Crossovers and Future of the Soap

Regarding the recent Corriedale crossover episode, Faye admitted she hadn't watched it but praised the concept. 'I always thought that they should do it. I'm surprised they hadn't done it before, it's only 40 miles down the M62,' she said. She encouraged more crossovers, saying, 'It doesn't have to be a big thing. It could just be one person popping up in Weatherfield, or the other way around.'

Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
