Emmerdale fans have been left saying a heartbreaking goodbye to Dawn Fletcher, six years after she arrived in the village, as she sadly died following the premature birth of baby Tate.
Actress Olivia Bromley joined the ITV soap, which is filmed in Leeds, in 2018 as Dawn Taylor, before becoming Dawn Fletcher in 2022 after tying the knot with Billy Fletcher. But last year, her life was turned upside down when she embarked on an affair with Joe Tate.
Affair and Downfall
Things quickly unravelled when Dawn discovered the horrifying extent of Joe’s crimes during Lydia’s surprise party at Home Farm. To make matters even worse, she learned that Joe had threatened to send her daughter, Clemmie, away after she bit him when she caught him kissing Dawn.
Then came the bombshell, as viewers watched in shock as Joe was pushed from an upstairs window. With nine suspects in the frame, the mystery surrounding his downfall kept fans guessing until it was eventually revealed that Dawn was the culprit.
Despite everything, Dawn and Joe somehow managed to repair their fractured relationship, and before long, the pair were falling deeper and deeper in love - much to the horror of those around them.
Wedding Chaos
With the loved-up couple preparing to say "I do" at a lavish Tate wedding, Dawn was also eagerly awaiting the arrival of Joe’s first child. But, as every seasoned soap fan knows, there’s no such thing as a smooth trip down the aisle.
Just days before the big day, Dawn’s ex-husband Billy was attacked at the depot, with suspicion immediately falling on Joe. Although Billy couldn’t remember what had happened, Joe’s dark history made him all too believable as the culprit and Billy was more than happy to tell Dawn that he was responsible.
Of course, viewers knew the truth. It was Kev Barton who had attacked Billy, and he eventually confessed everything to him. But with Dawn still unaware of Joe’s innocence, she made the heartbreaking decision to run away with Billy and the children, leaving Joe behind.
Yet the truth, as it so often does in Emmerdale, eventually came crashing out. Realising her mistake, Dawn raced to the marquee to confess her love for Joe. As she asked him to marry her, however, Jimmy King suddenly crashed into the marquee, sending debris flying and throwing the celebrations into complete chaos.
Tragic Death
Tragically, Jimmy died at the scene, with Nicola desperately trying to say an emotional, gut-wrenching goodbye to her husband. She eventually managed to escape the wreckage with a pregnant Dawn, but Joe was left trapped beneath the fallen debris. As Graham Foster desperately rushed to save him, an explosion ripped through the marquee, seemingly leaving Joe for dead. Thankfully, Joe survived.
But on Sunday (August 30), the tragedy took another devastating turn as Dawn became the latest victim of the wedding disaster. After welcoming her baby boy, Dawn and Joe appeared ready to put the chaos behind them and finally begin a new chapter together.
However, as Joe sat by Dawn’s hospital bed, hoping to talk to her, his world came crashing down once again when he realised she was unresponsive. Despite the hospital staff’s desperate efforts to save her, Joe was told that Dawn had suffered a significant haemorrhage, causing her heart to stop. Heartbroken and utterly helpless, Joe could only sit by Dawn’s bedside, imagining the life they could have had and the wedding they never got to share.
And the scenes left Emmerdale fans in bits as they flocked to social media to comment. @thatsmypeachx said: "Oh Dawn [broken heart emoji] #Emmerdale." @GeorgiaEH17 commented: "I’m so sad Joe and Dawn were meant to be endgame :( #emmerdale."
@AnnieSugden75 wrote: "The name conversation was such a lovely fun moment. But oh that was sad [crying face emoji]. RIP Dawn Ned was amazing seeing a different Joe. One with a heart. Wonder which direction they will take Joe from here? Hopefully one that grows his heart, but time will tell Goodbye Olivia #emmerdale."
