Emmerdale and The Archers Actor Eric Allan Dies Aged 85

Eric Allan, the actor best known for playing Frank Blakey in Emmerdale and Bert Fry in The Archers, has died at the age of 85. He passed away on 8 February and is survived by his wife, Susan, and their two children.

Allan joined the cast of Emmerdale Farm in 1972, before it was renamed Emmerdale 17 years later. His character Frank was known for opposing hunting and for marrying Janie Harker in the soap's first wedding. After leaving the show in 1974, he voiced Bert Fry on Radio 4's The Archers for 23 years, taking over from the original actor after his death.

Born David Eric Allan on 8 March 1940, he began his acting career in 1967 with an episode of The Wednesday Play. He also appeared in Z Cars, Barlow, The Bill, Heartbeat, Bergerac and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes over his 53-year career. Before television, he worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, including in Peter Brook's production of US and with Mike Leigh.
