Sir Elton John and David Furnish are set to marry in a low-key ceremony in May, following the legalisation of same-sex marriage in England and Wales. The couple, who entered a civil partnership in 2005, announced their plans in an interview with NBC's Today programme.
John described the change in law as a 'joyous' occasion, stating: 'For this legislation to come through is joyous and we should celebrate it. We shouldn't just say, "Oh, well, we have a civil partnership, we're not going to bother to get married". We will get married.' Furnish added that friends and family have been eagerly awaiting details, with the phone 'ringing off the hook'.
The wedding will take place at a register office in England, with their two sons, Zachary, three, and Elijah, one, and a couple of witnesses attending. Furnish revealed that John has had the children's names tattooed on his back.
The announcement comes as John's 40th anniversary edition of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road entered the UK album charts at number 12. Meanwhile, the first same-sex marriages took place over the weekend, with Prime Minister David Cameron hailing the introduction as a 'historic day'.
