EastEnders fans are concerned that the soap has foreshadowed a major tragedy for Penny Branning. In tonight's episode, Penny faced a serious health issue as she developed a blood clot, endangering both her and her baby.
Penny (Kitty Castledine) was with her uncle Max (Jake Wood) when she began coughing up blood. At the hospital, the doctor told her she had suffered a blood clot but that both she and her baby were fine. Breaking down with boyfriend Vinny (Shiv Jalota), she promised to take better care of her health.
Fans Fear Foreshadowing of Death
An earlier scene had fans convinced that Penny would die before the year ended. While Max was calling the hospital, she told him that if anything happened, she wanted them to "save the baby," perhaps foreshadowing that this is a choice someone will eventually have to make.
"More subtle foreshadowing from Penny here regarding her possible fate ahead of the Flashforward. I really hope we don't lose Penny Branning by the end of the year. She's one of my favourite characters on the show and Kitty Castledine is such a credit to the cast," one fan said.
In the New Year flashforward, Penny's father Jack (Scott Maslen) was taking care of a baby called Ethan, and Penny was nowhere to be seen. As such, fans thought that Penny would die before New Year's Day.
Fan Theories on Max's Role
Another fan added: "Today’s episode genuinely makes me believe Penny is being killed off in the coming months in line with not seeing her during the NYD episode."
A third fan noted that Max told Penny he wasn't going to let anything happen to her and wondered if that was the real foreshadowing. "I know she was only saying what any mother would, but hopefully Penny saying they need to save the baby rather than her is a red herring, and instead Max's reply about not letting anything happen to her is the proper foreshadowing," they said.
But some thought that Max's primary involvement with Penny and her child might be over. Elsewhere in the flashforward, his son Oscar (Pierre Counihan-Moullier) reminded his family that Max had saved Ethan's life.
Questions Remain About Flashforward
Fans wondered if Max's fast action in getting Penny to the hospital counted as him saving the baby. Yet, many thought there was more to come.
"I’m sticking with the theory something WILL happen to Penny involving an accident and Max will save Ethan and Jimmy and try and fail to save Penny," one fan wrote online.
Another said: "Say there’s an incident involving Penny like a fire, car crash etc and she rescues Jimmy and Ethan by giving them to Max, but he goes back and tries to save Penny (who dies) sparking his feud with Jack."
The flashforward episode aired on 1 January 2026 but depicted events happening on 1 January 2027, and the soap has been catching up ever since. There are plenty of questions that seem to have been answered, but what is real and what is a red herring remains unclear.
