Eamonn Holmes Praises Girlfriend Katie as 'Perfect Tonic' During Health Battle
Veteran broadcaster Eamonn Holmes has publicly addressed ongoing speculation about his health, firmly stating that his girlfriend Katie Alexander is "the perfect tonic" as he navigates daily challenges with pain and limited mobility. The 65-year-old former This Morning host, who has been seen using a wheelchair in recent months, opened up about his condition in a candid interview.
Chronic Pain and Mobility Challenges
Holmes revealed he lives with significant back issues that have severely impacted his mobility, stemming from major spinal surgery in 2022 that he admits "went wrong." The procedure was intended to address years of pain from slipped discs and subsequent complications, but instead left him with limited movement. "I may be physically struggling, but mentally I'm still very much on the ball," Holmes asserted defiantly. "I honestly don't feel any different from when I started on TV over 40 years ago."
The broadcaster explained he now struggles to walk for extended periods and requires assistance with day-to-day mobility tasks. "I do find it hard to walk long distances and on occasion need a bit of help to get dressed," he admitted. Holmes has arranged for regular support, including friends who check in on him and a driver to help with transportation.
Katie Alexander: A Calming Presence
Following his highly publicised split from ex-wife Ruth Langsford in May 2024 after 14 years of marriage, Holmes has found solace in his relationship with 44-year-old child psychologist Katie Alexander from Yorkshire. "She's the perfect tonic," Holmes said warmly, describing how their gentle countryside walks together provide a calming escape from the pressures of his health battle and high-profile career.
"There was a time when I could get up and go on the treadmill... but I can't do that now because of my back," Holmes explained. "I have arthritis in my spine and am in pain, but going on gentle walks in the countryside with Katie is the perfect tonic." The couple's shared love of food, particularly Chinese cuisine, has further strengthened their bond, with Holmes even planning a trip to Hong Kong to explore its famous street food scene together.
Defying Critics and Embracing Life
Despite facing criticism from some quarters, including recent accusations of falling asleep on air, Holmes remains determined to maintain his professional commitments. "The frustrating thing is, people see the photos of me in vulnerable moments... but I am working. I'm giving it my all," he stated. "You've got to keep going, and I love what I do."
Holmes recently attended the prestigious World Young Chef Young Waiter Competition at London's Jumeirah Carlton Tower hotel, where he praised the next generation of culinary talent. Sampling dishes including a complex Hong Kong-inspired scallop, he noted how the experience reignited his passion for bold flavours. "I'm tasting things I've never experienced before... that's what makes it exciting," he remarked.
Looking Forward with Optimism
While Holmes and Alexander currently live separately—he in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, and she in Yorkshire—they are navigating their relationship following his divorce with apparent happiness. Holmes acknowledges his dietary indulgences, confessing a particular weakness for custard creams, but emphasizes that love, rather than food or fame, is what truly sustains him during this challenging chapter.
As he faces one of the toughest periods of his life, Eamonn Holmes is proving determined not to fade quietly into the background, instead choosing to focus on the positive support system he has found with Katie Alexander and the simple pleasures they share together.
