Fans of Downton Abbey have been left floored after discovering that Phyllis Logan, who played Mrs Hughes in the ITV period drama, is married to Kevin McNally, an actor best known for his role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Logan, 70, portrayed the steadfast yet warm-hearted housekeeper Mrs Hughes across all six series of the show. She reprised the role in the subsequent big-screen outings, including Downton Abbey (2019), Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022), and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025).
Mrs Hughes and Mr Bryant's on-screen connection
Mrs Hughes, also known as Elsie Carson, oversaw the entire domestic staff of Downton Abbey alongside Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier), after he succeeded her husband, Charles Carson (Jim Carter), as butler. The character featured in a host of unforgettable storylines throughout her time in Yorkshire, among them a cancer scare and her slow-burning romance with Mr Carson.
Phyllis is married to English actor and writer Kevin McNally. The pair first met in 1994, before tying the knot in August 2011. McNally launched his acting career in the BBC's television adaptation of I, Claudius, but is perhaps most recognised for portraying Joshamee Gibbs in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Fans react to the revelation
There is yet another connection, as McNally also appeared alongside his wife in Downton Abbey. He memorably took on the role of Horace Bryant in the series, the father of Major Charles Bryant (Daniel Pirrie). Charles fathered a child with housemaid Ethel Parks (Amy Nuttall) before losing his life in the war. Horace initially refused to recognise or provide for the child, before eventually coming forward to help.
Viewers have been left stunned after discovering Logan's real-life connection to McNally, whose Downton Abbey character bears little resemblance to his role in Pirates of the Caribbean. One person wrote on Reddit: "Just found out that Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes) is married to Kevin McNally (horrible Mr. Bryant)! !" Another added: "The dude from Pirates of the Caribbean? That's awesome," while a third remarked: "I had no idea they were the same person. He looks so different in DA."
Someone else wrote: "I had to google who Mr Bryant was as I'd forgotten and wow I didn't recognise the actor at all," with another similarly sharing: "The fact that so many are amazed at how different those two characters are attest to McNally's acting skill."
