Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to return to the UK within days, with the surprise announcement made public on Wednesday evening. The couple have lived in California since 2020, just weeks after their shock decision to step down as senior working royals.
Doria Ragland's Role in the US
The couple, joined by their young son, relocated to the US, with one family member seemingly stepping in to be by their side. Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, has reportedly been a nurturing presence during their life in the US. The 69-year-old is also known to have a sweet bond with her two grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. As well as sharing a close relationship with the family, Doria is thought to have previously moved into their home in Montecito.
Impact of the Move on Doria
However, with the shocking move revealed, Doria will likely feel sadness about her daughter and son-in-law's decision. Sources previously noted how close Harry is with his mother-in-law, revealing previously that he "adores" her, finds her presence "refreshing," and "loves being mothered".
Royal Family Informed
It is understood there will be no change to the Sussexes' role and status as private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family. King Charles was first made aware of the move on Sunday, just three days before it was made public. The King is said to welcome the opportunity to see more of the family, both in a private and personal capacity. Prince William and Princess Catherine have also reportedly been made aware of the Sussexes' shock decision. Harry and Meghan, who reportedly already have their UK base sorted, have enrolled their children on British schools.
