Country music legend Dolly Parton, 80, died just days after revealing she had neglected her own wellbeing while caring for her husband in the period leading up to his death last year. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her death in an emotional video tribute, describing the star as a beloved aunt, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Health Struggles Before Death
Parton was absent from the opening night of a new attraction at her Tennessee theme park earlier this month following episodes of dizziness and dehydration, with medical professionals advising against travel. Following the cancelled appearance, she revealed to People: "I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn't pay attention to when I was watching over Carl."
The Jolene vocalist was wed to Carl Thomas Dean for nearly 60 years before his passing in March 2025, at the age of 82. Parton went on to say: "It's not like I haven't been through hard times with my health. But I think because we live in a 24/7 world with social media, everything gets magnified in ways it wasn't years ago. I used to joke that I was the Queen of the Tabloids, but now I guess I can say I'm the Queen of Social Media AI!"
Postponed Engagements and Public Statements
"Seriously, though, even though I'm still healin', I'm still workin'," she added. Her remarks follow a series of postponed or cancelled engagements amid growing concerns about her health. The mounting speculation led Parton to share a video on social media in October 2025, joking that she "ain't dead yet".
"There are just a lot of rumours flying around. But I figured if you heard it from me, you'd know that I was OK," she stated in a video uploaded to Instagram. In May, the singer was compelled to call off a Las Vegas residency owing to health issues, expressing to fans that she was "truly sorry" and informing Instagram followers that "everything I have is treatable" while acknowledging it would require time "before I'm up to stage-performance level".
Final Days and Public Reaction
Parton had initially been scheduled to deliver six performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in December, but was obliged to postpone them due to undisclosed "health challenges". "The good news is I'm responding really well to meds and treatments and I'm improving every day," she revealed in the Instagram video.
