Dolly Parton once revealed the meaning behind her iconic song "Jolene," sharing how her late husband Carl Dean reacted when he first heard it. The country music legend, who died on August 25 in Nashville, Tennessee, after a brief battle with cancer, explained that jealousy inspired one of her most famous tracks.
The story behind Jolene
Released in 1973, "Jolene" tells the emotional tale of a woman begging another woman not to "take my man." Many listeners relate to the song, which explores feelings of jealousy within a relationship.
In an interview on BBC's The One Show in 2023, Parton opened up about her husband's thoughts after hearing the song for the first time. She said: "Everyone has a Jolene in their lives."
Carl Dean's reaction
Speaking to host Alex Jones, she said: "He [Carl] was a little embarrassed when I wrote the song Jolene. I was just jealous because she was a beautiful woman and he was just flirting."
She added: "So it gave me a great idea for a song. There's always a Jolene in somebody's life."
"There's always somebody prettier than you or somebody you fear they are better than you. I just joke about it now, I say to him 'I see you over there in that La-Z-Boy chair snoring and sleeping and I think where's Jolene? You can have him now Jolene'."
A song loosely based on truth
Parton previously explained the song was "loosely based on a little bit of truth" after her husband was spending time with a woman who worked at the bank.
Speaking on stage at Glastonbury in 2014, Parton said: "Some of you may or may not know that this song was loosely based on a little bit of truth. I wrote that years ago when my husband was spending a little more time with Jolene than I thought he should be."
She added: "I got rid of that redhead woman in a hurry. I want you folks to know that something good can come from anything. Had it not been for that woman I would never have written 'Jolene', and I wouldn't have made all that money, so thank you, Jolene."
While the character of "Jolene" was based on a real woman, Parton chose not to use her real name. Instead, she heard the name when she met a young fan after a concert who asked for an autograph.
A lasting love story
Despite writing a song about jealousy in a relationship, Parton was married to her husband Carl for almost 60 years. The pair never had biological children, but Parton famously treated her friends' children as her own, building a close bond with her nieces and nephews.
In 2019, Carl was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He died in March 2025 at the age of 82 after a six-year battle. Parton was heartbroken by his death and shared a statement at the time.
The 9 to 5 singer said: "I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18-years-old. We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together. Like all great love stories, they never end."
