Bookmakers have identified Martin Clunes, best known for his role in Doc Martin, and Death in Paradise star Ralf Little as leading candidates to replace DI Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh in the BBC crime drama Shetland, following Alison O'Donnell's announcement that she is leaving the series after 13 years.
Bookmakers' Odds and Frontrunners
Betway has given Ralf Little odds of 7/1 to step into the role, while Martin Clunes follows closely at 10/1. Other contenders include former Shetland star Douglas Henshall at 12/1, Mark Bonnar at 14/1, Martin Compston at 20/1, James Nesbitt at 25/1, and David Tennant at 33/1. The BBC has not yet confirmed who will replace the beloved character or the future of the show.
Alison O'Donnell's Departure
Alison O'Donnell, who played DI McIntosh for 13 years, issued a heartfelt statement following her exit announcement. She said, 'Playing Tosh has been the greatest gift an actor could hope for. To be able to stay with the character, to allow her to grow in depth and maturity, and to be consistently rewarded and challenged by the writing and stories, has been such a rich and special experience.' She added, 'I grew up in this job. It has shaped me as an actor and as a collaborator. It's in my bones and in my heart. As are the isles themselves, which have become like a second home to me and to my family.'
New Series and Cast
Filming for the latest series has recently begun in Scotland, with O'Donnell's final storyline set to feature in a new six-part series. She will be joined by returning cast members including Ashley Jensen, Steven Robertson, Lewis Howden, Samuel Anderson, Steven Miller, Anne Kidd, Angus Miller, Connor McCarry, and Eubha Akilade. Shetland is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
